Aaron Lee Kaplan is a blues/folk fingerstyle and slide guitarist. His new album is a collection of solo guitar instrumentals inspired by life in Wisconsin.

"I've known Aaron Lee Kaplan a long time. I have watched him play a lot of music in a lot of different styles. I've also gotten to know him as a genuine, casual, funny man. Despite the fact that Dairyland is his first completely instrumental albums, those qualities show through.
The fingerstyle instrumental blues folk presented in this album harkens back to a simpler time but there is nothing simple about Kaplan's playing here. He has studied and worked at this style that lies somewhere between ragtime and Delta blues.
There is sunshine and levity in these songs. The album sounds like summer time. Green fields of growing crops. Rising temperatures quenched by cool lemonade. Stories and off color jokes told between friends on front porches. Scorching sunshine fading into watercolor sky finishes. It's all here without words. Kaplan tells stories and paints pictures with his guitar.
This album is nearly a year old but I felt it was important to review it anyway. Not just because Aaron is my friend but because this has been an important album to me in the intervening year. The world has gone a little crazy since March 2020 possibly irreparably so. Dairyland has been a source of calm in trying times for me. A musical security blanket. A ray of sunshine I can manifest at any time just by pressing play. I've played in public, corporate environments and when I've been home all alone. It's that rare piece of music in my collection that seems to fit all situations.
